Review on Frog and Scot
The Frog & Scot, a lively French bistro is a welcome addition to the Kent seaside town of Deal on the English Channel. Set on the High Street, a couple of minutes walk from the beach, it takes its name from owners Benoit who hails from France and Sarah from bonny Scotland, who have already established the popular Le Pinardier wine shop and bar, a few doors away.
The restaurant is laid out with simple wooden tables and chairs and there's additional seating at the marble topped bar. Large windows flood the room with lots of natural light and during summer months there's additional seating on the pavement, where you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the street.
Pulling in fresh local ingredients for his inventive French bistro style dishes is David Gadd, who formerly sharpened his knives at the Michelin starred The Sportsman in Seasalter. The blackboard menu changes regularly to reflect the best of the daily produce, but you can expect starters in the shape of seared scallops, celeriac purée and bacon or maybe pork rillettes with fennel and onion. Main courses embrace pan fried hake fillet with mussels au pistou or from the land roast leg and slow braised shoulder of lamb with minted roasting juices. Desserts conjure up salted caramel and warm chocolate mousse tartlette paired with hazelnut praline ice cream or lemon and lime posset with rhubarb and prosecco granita.
There's an innovative wine list to match the food featuring organic, biodynamic and natural wines.
