Review on The Gate Marylebone
Michael and Adrian Daniel launched their Hammersmith award-winning vegetarian restaurant called The Gate in 1989, a second one followed in 2012 in North London, Islington and now they have chosen Marylebone for their third branch. Occupying a quiet spot on Seymour Place a few minutes walk from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, it has a double fronted aspect which fills the restaurant with natural light. There's a few tables set on the pavement when the weather is warm, while the interior is simple decorated with whitewashed brick walls, olive green banquettes and wood furnishings.
The kitchen takes inspiration from their grandmother's home cooking with a fusion of Indian, Arabic and Jewish cuisines. The Marylebone site is the only branch that is open for breakfast serving dishes such as homemade granola, vegan pancakes and herb omelettes. When it comes to choices from the a la carte menu there's culinary delights like artichoke terrine, truffle and hazelnut infused artichoke, homemade sundried tomato and basil salsa and crispy bread to start, followed by wild mushroom risotto cake, sauté girolle, pleurote, pied de mouton and trompette mushrooms, served on pan fried risotto cake finished with a creamy cep sauce, rocket and lemon truffle dressing. To finish sweet temptations might include dark chocolate snowball, dark chocolate shell filled with chocolate mousse and salted date caramel sauce or a sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel ice cream.
The food is supported by a wine list that focuses on natural and biodynamic vintners, with plenty of options available by the glass and carafe. There's also a cocktail menu offering drinks such as Lychee Bellini, prosecco, lychee liqueur and hibiscus flower.
