Review on Lussmanns
Having scored a long-running hit with their Herfordshire restaurants in St Albans, Hertford, Harpenden and Hitchin, Lussmanns opened their fifth venue in June 2017 in the small upmarket town of Tring. In a prime High Street location laid out over two floors in a former bank, the historic building can trace its roots back to 1922. It has been sympathetically restored to its former glory retaining many of the lovely art deco features, with a spacious ground floor dining room affording a view into the kitchen. There's also an elegant wood panelled dining room in what used to be the bank manager's office, ideal for private parties and special occasions.
The kitchen looks to freshly prepared, great tasting food, with regionally sourced ingredients from the UK's best artisan suppliers, with a strong focus on sustainability. The menu kicks off in true style with starters in the shape of Sussex woodland-reared pork and duck rillette cornichon and toast or from the sea Devon crab and macaroni cheese lemon and parsley gremolata. Main courses usher in free-range chicken casserole creamed mash Label Anglais chicken leg, anchovy, chilli and rosemary or maybe House fishcake baby spinach, caper and parsley butter sauce. Desserts aim for comfort in a big way, with a spiced treacle and citrus pudding paired with country cream ice cream or Black Forest gâteau.
Service is relaxed and friendly, and there's a carefully compiled wine list, British craft beers and English organic juices to complement the dishes.
