Review on Fiume
Chef Francesco Mazzei and D&D London have opened their third restaurant together, aptly named Fiume meaning river, it's located on the banks of the River Thames in the Circus West Village, part of the £9 billion redevelopment project at Battersea Power Station.
The 120-cover stylish restaurant has been designed by Macaulay Sinclair making excellent use of natural materials such as oak, stone and marble with contrasting pale blue furnishings. Flooded with light from the floor to ceiling glass frontage, there's a black granite bar with counter seating and an open kitchen to take in all the action of the chefs at work. During summer months, their lovely piazza with riverside views is a magnet for al fresco dining, surrounded by lemon and olive trees, as well as terracotta pots filled with fragrant lavender.
Mazzei has appointed Francesco Chiarelli to oversee the day-to-day running of the restaurant which showcases the cuisine of Mezzogiorno, whose diverse culinary heritage covers eight different regions of southern Italy, all with their own traditional recipes and identities. Among the Antipasti look for octopus and cannellini beans, while the Primi section of the menu offers dishes such as Welsh lamb ragu' fettuccine. Other possibilities among the main courses include Roman-style chicken or sea bass Guazzetto for those who prefer fish. Desserts stay close to home with a tiramisu or sbriciolata.
To accompany the food there's an all-Italian wine list and a regularly changing cocktail menu.
