Review on Caravan Exmouth Market
Caravan opened their first restaurant in Exmouth Market in 2010, such was its success that over the years three other siblings followed in King's Cross, Bankside and the Bloomberg Arcade in the City. Occupying a corner location on pedestrianised Exmouth Market, it has a glazed frontage on both sides flooding the restaurant with lots of natural light. The basement houses the kitchen and their popular coffee roastery, which is also available for private dining for up to twelve guests. The main dining room is on the ground floor seating 48, with a further 18 chairs at the bar. During summer months the doors can be opened out onto their terrace, where guests can sit and watch the hustle and bustle of the market.
The kitchen serves their signature well travelled breakfast and an all day menu, ensuring that it's a crowd-pleasing venue that offers something for everyone, a delicious cup of coffee and snack, local beers on taps, a cocktail or a relaxing glass of wine with one of their small plates. Typical offerings on the carte include pan-fried mackerel, pine nuts, preserved lemon, sultanas and capers or chorizo and sweet potato croquettes served with saffron mayonnaise. Amongst the larger plates there's Elwy Valley lamb meatballs, braised tomato, bulgur, cumin yogurt and almond or pan-fried sea bass, red coconut curry, daikon, carrot and peanuts. Caravan's pudding menu is also very tempting, witness chocolate delice with miso ice cream and sesame brittle or ginger cake with hibiscus poached pear, rum syrup and clotted cream.
There's an extensive wine list to accompany the food, together with beer, cocktails and spirits.
