Review on Kudu

Kudu is a fascination newcomer that opened in January 2018 in the burgeoning foodie scene of Peckham in south-east London. The double act behind this establishment certainly have A-list credentials, chef Patrick Williams mans the stoves and running front-of-house with considerable charm is Amy Corbin. Patrick climbed the culinary ladder at the renowned La Colombe in Cape Town before working for acclaimed chef and restaurateur Robin Gill. Amy is the daughter of Chris Corbin of Corbin & King, whose prestigious portfolio includes London restaurants the Delauney and the Wolseley.

The restaurant is named after an African antelope, as well as their signature Kudu bread, which is cooked in a copper pot and served with melted lardon or seafood butter. Amy who previously worked in New York in interior design has created a cosy and welcoming environment, with rough-plastered dusky pink walls decorated with pressed botanicals, and turquoise blue velvet banquettes set on reclaimed African parquet flooring. There's also further seating on bar stools overlooking all the action in the open kitchen.

Ingredients are carefully sourced from local suppliers where possible, alongside foraged produce and whatever they can gather from their own herb garden and vegetable plot. Williams takes inspiration from his South African roots for his menu that could kick off with starters such as pig's head tortellini, mushroom and hay broth with crispy onions or scorched mackerel tartar, cucumber and nori. To follow there's Braai lamb neck, smoked yogurt, lettuce and Brussel tops or from the sea roasted skate wing, charred calcots and samphire. While desserts are lively ideas like chocolate mousse, mint ice cream and peppermint crisp or pumpkin tart, salted caramel, charcoal and almond sorbet.

Kudu offers a concise wine list with options available by the bottle, carafe or glass together with cocktails including the Smokey Kudu, made with South African whiskey and wormwood bitters.
