Review on Pomona’s
Set in the leafy environs of Hereford Road in the heart of Notting Hill, Pomona's is located in the building that housed the former pub called The Commander. It has undergone a serious revamp by West London, Sundae Design Studio and now sports a fun and quirky décor in keeping with it's laid-back L.A. vibe and West Californian cooking.
Taking inspiration from David Hokney's Malibu period of work, the restaurant showcases a kaleidoscope of colours throughout the canteen style room including the colourful chairs. There's an inviting lounge filled with natural light and hanging pot plants where you can relax with a drink, or during summer months you can dine under their pergola surrounded by exotic palms. Upstairs they have a trio of private dining and event rooms which are available for hire.
Taking the reins of the open kitchen is chef Ruth Hansom, who joins the restaurant from Luton Hoo's fine dining Wernher restaurant where she was Head Chef. She showcases an eclectic menu of nutritional and seasonal dishes making use of wood and charcoal, with an emphasis on sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. The small plates designed for sharing are a good starting point in the shape of crisp squid with romesco or Auvergne mountain ham croquettes. Healthy and light options include Jerusalem artichoke, spinach, sun blushed tomato and pine nuts or carnivores will opt for the beef short ribs with house slaw, cooked over wood and charcoal. Completing the picture are desserts like caramelized croissant and prune pine with crème anglaise or almond and golden raisin cajeta panna cotta.
To accompany the food there's a nice selection of beer and smoothies, cocktails like Pomona's Party Punch, Somerset Pomona, homemade apple bitters and kumquat, and wines with a focus on California and Europe.
