Review on Bryn Williams at Somerset House

Acclaimed Welsh chef Bryn Williams of the three AA Rosette Odette's in Primrose Hill and a seaside bistro in Porth Eirias, Colwyn Bay, opened his third restaurant on 5 March 2018 in the iconic Somerset House. Just a short walk from Temple tube station and the Lyceum Theatre, the interiors have been created by Rosendale Design Group. They have taken inspiration from not only the buildings naval history, when it was occupied by the Navy between 1789 and 1873, but also Bryn's Welsh roots. Tan leather banquettes and Welsh printed upholstery are set on herringbone flooring, wall lights are made from lighthouse lenses, there's antique naval map drawers, and paintings from Welsh fine art photographer Allan Jenkins decorating the walls.

It will also be home to a draught beer bar which will be open all day, featuring statement overhead copper beer casks and bar fronts made from Welsh slate. Some tables within the restaurant will afford guests views across the river, as well as from the al fresco terrace which will prove a popular draw during the summer months.

Open all day from breakfast, through to lunch and dinner, the menu will emphasise sustainability, seasonality and provenance with fruit and vegetables sharing centre stage, alongside meat and fish. Typically you might choose to start with Heritage beetroot, cured organic salmon and smoked rosemary mayonnaise or from the land pickled radishes, black garlic, apple and pork belly. Other promising ideas include field mushroom, confit shallots, rib eye steak and triple cooked chips or roast young broccoli, olive tapenade, sage and grilled red mullet. As for desserts check out their bay leaf panna cotta, blackberry, hazelnut and lime curd or lavender meringue, lemon posset, lavender and blueberry ice-cream.

The wine list is a well sourced slate, there's craft beers and signature cocktails like Rabbit on a Sidecar, carrot juice, brandy, triple sec and a hint of ginger.
