Review on Brat
Brat opened it's doors in March 2018 on trendy Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, just a 10 minute walk from Liverpool Street station. It's the first solo venture from ex-Kitty Fisher's chef Tomos Parry, who launched the restaurant with Smoking Goat's Ben Chapman and Brian Hannon, located downstairs. Accessed by the 1930s stairwell, the wood-panelled dining room on the first floor has a simple décor retaining many of the original features. Guests can either sit at the plain wooden tables or perch on the high stools surrounding the counter, where you can watch all the action of the chefs cooking using the wood ovens in the open kitchen.
Taking its name from the slang term for turbot, Parry took inspiration for the restaurant from the charming fishing village Getaria in northern Spain, well known for its barbecues. The kitchen works closely with trusted suppliers with seafood supplied from the day-boats in Cornwall and meat from his native Wales. Moorland beef tartar makes a good starting point or for fish fans there's spider crab, cabbage and fennel. Moving on there's dishes such as Herdwyck Lamb or whole turbot, finishing with a dessert of burnt cheesecake and rhubarb.
The excellent wine list has been curated by the new importing company from Noble Rot founders, Keeling Andrew & Co. Brat was the proud recipient of a Michelin star in the 2019 edition of the prestigious restaurant guide.
