Review on 20 Stories
Des Gunewardena and David Loewi, the dynamic duo behind the well regarded D&D collection of restaurants, have extended their foodie empire to Manchester with the opening of 20 Stories. Set in the heart of the Spinningfields area of Manchester, the £4m double-height restaurant is perched on the 19th floor, featuring floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views across the city.
Designed by New York CetraRuddy in collaboration with UK-based agency DesignLSM it impresses with its stunning good looks and glitzy, no-expense-spared interior. A swanky marble-topped bar is situated between the fine dining restaurant and the more informal grill restaurant, each with their own separate menus. There's also a lovely roof garden which will prove very popular during summer months with its breathtaking vistas.
The kitchen proposes a modern British menu with fresh seasonal ingredients sourced within a 50-mile radius where possible. Open proceedings with roast pigeon, cherries and violet mustard or smoked eel and apple salad, cucumber and apple. Moving on there's loin of Herdwick lamb, potato gnocchi and girolles or poached John Dory, lobster, chicken and white asparagus amongst the main courses. Desserts conjure up Manchester tart or maybe chocolate fondant and rocky road ice cream.
A floor to ceiling temperature controlled wine rack holds an international slate of bottles, with some serious contenders along the way.
