Review on Ikoyi
Ikoyi can be found in a peaceful location in the new St James's Market development, a stone's throw from Piccadilly Circus. Named after an upmarket area in the district of Lagos in Nigeria, it has a smart glass frontage that floods the room with natural light. The sleek interiors have been designed by London based Studio Ashby in neutral colours, with lighting provided by clay lamps and mustard coloured banquettes set against pale wood tables. It also features counter seating at the small secluded bar and an open kitchen.
It's the brainchild of two friends, Iré Hassan-Odukale and Chinese-Canadian chef Jeremy Chan, who has sharpened his knives in critically acclaimed kitchens such as Claude Bosi's Hibiscus, Heston Blumenthal's Dinner and René Redzepi's Noma. Their fine dining food is based on inventive West African flavours and they have quickly picked up a number of glowing reviews from top restaurant critics, as well as a coveted Michelin star in the 2019 edition of the Guide. Seafood gets a good airing in dishes such as Octopus, Ndolé and Calçot amongst the starters or Monkfish, Banga and Citrus Asaro as a main course. Options for meat lovers include the likes of Wagyu Beef, Smoked Eel, Iru and Broccoli or Duck, Uda, Candied Bacon and Bitter Leaf. Among the desserts look for Kent Mango, Ogbono and Buttermilk or Groundnut and Zobo.
There's a carefully compiled wine list to complement the vibrant flavours of the dishes, as well as carefully crafted cocktails such as Ekó Mail, Havana 3, Orange Blossom, Soave and Verjus.
