Review on Shikumen Aldgate
Shikumen Aldgate is the latest arm of an upmarket collection of Chinese restaurants, set on the first floor of the modern Dorsett City Hotel, within walking distance of the iconic Gherkin and the major tourist attraction of The Tower of London. There are three others in the group located in Shepherd's Bush, Ealing and Finchley Road and the Aldgate branch like its siblings has a sleek décor with the ambience of 1940's Shanghai. Tables set on polished stone flooring are separated by dark wood Oriental screens, and traditional artwork adorns the walls.
The kitchen offers all day dining, kicking of with a full buffet breakfast with dim sum selections. Shikumen has an excellent reputation for its carefully crafted dim sum and well executed traditional Chinese dishes, ingredients are carefully selected from the finest British produce together with Chinese saucing, garnish and taste. Their signature dish is authentic Beijing Peking duck which is carved at the table and served with handmade pancakes and Chinese buns. The carte also has its share of seafood witness pan fried lobster meat ball with abalone broth on noodle or King prawn curry with almond slices and fresh lily. To conclude there's mango pudding with fresh fruit or green tea crème brûlée.
There's a carefully chosen wine list to complement the food, together with Chinese tea, cocktails and saké.
