The Light House is everything you could wish for in a modern-day neighbourhood restaurant: from the moment you step through the door, you know it is going to be something special. The interior looks the part with plain walls, bare wood tables and a sophisticated bar area – plus enough window space to let the light flood in.
Chef Chris Casey is carrying on where his predecessors left off, offering food that has exciting echoes of Italian fusion blended with pan-Asian crossovers. Ingredients garnered from all over the place, so don't be surprised to find char-grilled springbok with sweet potato mash and mushroom wonton rubbing shoulders with black bean marinated buffalo Mozzarella, pickled carrots and Thai basil – and that's just for starters.
Main courses bring together lots of contrasting components – as in pan-fried cod with Brussels sprout tops, saffron butter sauce and romesco or soy-braised duck leg with spiced apple and black bean ragoût, pak choi and tamarind jus, while desserts return to the European theme with things like coffee pannacotta with roast apricots or pear frangipane tart with vanilla ice cream.
Set lunches are excellent value and traditional roasts put in an appearance on Sundays. There's also a limited menu for children, plus a well-balanced wine list featuring some interesting stuff from the New World.
