'The kind of venture that makes Londoners glad they've come to the seaside and locals even gladder that the don't live in London.' So wrote Tracey MacLeod in The Independent about this swinging bar/restaurant/inn that cruises along on the Suffolk coast as the flagship of Adnams brewery-cum-wine merchants.
A thorough makeover in the late '80s transformed The Crown from a rather sedate eighteenth-century coaching inn into a hip out-of-town venue specialising in cosmopolitan food and heavenly drinking. The place still has its nautically inclined bolthole for drinkers, but the real action is out front in the vast brasserie-style bar and the swanky dining room.
Whether you opt for the bar or the restaurant, expect modern food with lots of eclectic ideas and local seafood in abundance. Dishes such as seared scallops with warm potato salad and shisho cress or breast of duck with a wild garlic potato cake and buttered spring cabbage show the style, while desserts might range from rhubarb and custard mousse to dark chocolate ganache tart with marmalade ice cream.
The full Adams wine list is awesome in its breadth and individuality, and there's the added prospect of exploring more than 20 top tipples by the glass. It's an exceptional, highly distinctive and informative tome, with temptations on every page.
