Opened in 1995 in a delightful old 'character' building and named after the P.G. Woodhouse character Bertie Wooster, this is a much-liked restaurant-with-rooms jazzed up with brightly coloured original paintings.
At lunchtime the mood in the restaurant is casual, while in the evening linen napkins and candles create a more intimate atmosphere. Menus change monthly and there's a touch of nostalgia about some dishes such as black pudding, sage and onion faggots or fishcakes with herb and tomato sauce, although the kitchen is also firmly in tune with the times.
Local game might appear in the shape of pan-fried pigeon breasts with celeriac rémoulade and homemade prune jam or saddle of local hare wrapped in Parma ham, with tarragon stuffing and pearl barley broth. Seafood also gets a fair outing (fresh tuna is served with aubergine caviar, linguine and fennel confit, for example), while desserts might include marshmallow and Baileys crème brûlée with cinnamon shortbread. Also check out the selection of locally produced cheeses.
A lovely secret garden has recently been opened: perfect for those summer lunch parties!
