Sky-rocketed into the gastronomic firmament by Giorgio Locatelli, this discreet Knightsbridge restaurant with its smart, serious outlook still manages to hit the jackpot, even though superstar Giorgio has gone on to other things.
The strength of this place is its uncompromising attitude to ingredients and how chef Andrew Needham works his impeccable magic on them. Everything is true to the seasons and chosen with unerring care and commitment. The results can be startlingly good: Zafferano does have a Michelin star, after all.
Menus change regularly, dishes are replaced and re-invented as supplies dictate and the format is authentically Italian. Pasta is one of the kitchen's great strengths – perhaps ravioli of veal shank with saffron or pappardelle with porcini mushrooms. Fish dishes have ranged from roast halibut with potatoes, peppers and basil to pan-fried brill with lentils and parsley, while meat-eaters could be swayed by pigeon (off the bone) served on a bed of spinach with garlic purée or char-grilled lamb cutlets with aubergines. Tiramisù is a fixture; otherwise, desserts might include warm fig tart or Ricotta and lemon cake.
The all-Italian wine list brings together the great and the good, fine vintages abound and – if money is no option – it's worth checking out Piedmont and Tuscany in particular.
Zafferano recently branched opened at opened an Italian deli at 16 Halkin Arcade, Lowndes Street, London SW1.
