A great choice for a smart dinner in Cambridge, the long-running restaurant 22 occupies a green-shuttered, terraced Victorian house (22 Chesterton Road) a short stroll from the city centre. This is a place that thrives on intimacy, and it creates a neat impression with pastel green and salmon pink colours, white linen tablecloths and candles.
The monthly-changing fixed-price dinner menu is a structured affair that always opens with a soup (perhaps French onion and cider) as well as dishes like medallions of seared tuna nicoise with sesame dressing. Next comes a fish course (steamed mussels with tomatoes, chilli and coconut, for example) and a mixed leaf salad.
Main courses might range from confit of duck with a compote of beans and black olive sauce to sauteed pork cutlet with toasted fennel seeds on an apple rosti with Dijon mustard sauce. Finally there are desserts (lemon and ginger pannacotta with rhubarb soup) and a choice of cheeses. France dominates the broad, well-annotated wine list.
