Review on St Petroc's Bistro
Set up some years ago as the cut-price alternative to the nearby Seafood Restaurant, this crowd-puller is now a senior member of the Rick Stein dynasty. It's a bright and breezy place located in a white-painted hotel just up the hill from the harbour: vibrant local artwork decorates the walls, and there's an airy courtyard for al fresco meals when the sun shines on Padstow.
No-nonsense bistro cooking is the kitchen's business and locally landed fish is always a good bet on the brief, daily-changing menu. Piscine offerings might include a salad of grilled mackerel fillets with sun-dried tomatoes and fennel seeds, grilled lemon sole with anchovy butter or a peasant-style bourride of gurnard and salt cod.
Those who prefer something from the land might be tempted by Toulouse sausage with Puy lentils and red onion gravy, rabbit cacciatore with grilled Parmesan polenta or ribeye steak and chips, while desserts could be as simple as Cornish strawberries with clotted cream. The list of three dozen wines focuses on affordable stuff from Europe and the New World.
