Review on The Cleveland Tontine
Once a stopover for travellers wending their way between Newcastle and York, the Cleveland Tontine is a fine-looking early-Victorian stone inn. It's seen many changes along the way, but the 'slightly subterranean' bistro still does good business.
Turn up in the evening and you can expect the kitchen to be in full swing, offering anything from plates of Irish oysters to jam roly-poly or baked American cheesecake with homemade passion fruit curd. In between, it's a world tour for bistro-style offerings such as French boudin noir with apple crisps, Louisiana-style prawn gumbo, osso buco, and sea bass with lobster mash and curly kale. To finish, take a trip down memory lane with baked Alaska, spotted dick and crêpes San Lorenzo.
