Anchor Inn WinelistView our Restaurant review on Anchor Inn

White Wine by the Glass
175ml 250ml Bottle

1. Chardonnay/Cattaratto ~ Angelo, Sicily 2003
Light and fruity, with just a hint of melons from the Chardonnay to give structure to the youthful Cattaratto.
Very fruity, very more – ish.

2. Colombard/Ugni Blanc ~ Domaine de L'Escasses, Cote du Gascogne, France 2004

3. Sauvignon Blanc ~ de Touraine, Domaine de
Chezelles, Alain Marcadet, L. Valley, France 2004
This wine is often referred to as the 'Poor man's Sancerre' Why? Because its got all the quality of a good Sancerre at an affordable price. This really is a cracking wine, crisp with excellent melon fruit.
£3.70 £5.00 £13.95

6. Sangiovese/Negroamaro ~ Angelo, Puglia, Italy, 2003
Intensely deep colour in this very good value wine from Central Italy. Lots of ripe cherries on the nose, floral and perfumed. Good structure and easy drinking.
£3.15 £4.35 £11.75

7. Merlot ~ Cabrials, Vin du Pay d'Oc, Languedoc Roussillon, France 2004
This Merlot differs from most to be found in the South of France stepping away from its usual light quaffing characteristics to display a hearty wine that is full bodied, this wine really needs food.
£3.65 £5.15 £12.50

8. Tempranillo ~ Finca la Linda, Luigi Bosca, Mendoza, Argentina 2003
Most of us are familiar with this grape variety producing the reliable and excellent wines of Rioja in northern Spain. This wine echoes characteristics of Rioja however the fruit is much more upfront, pronounced and youthful.
£3.85 £5.45 £13.95

9. Shiraz/Cabernet ~ Brushwood, Beresford Wines, McClaren Vale, South Australia 2003
Here is a wine that demonstrates what the Aussies do best, this blend benefits from spice and pepper from the Shiraz and Blackcurrant fruit from the Cabernet, a well rounded wine from the famous Beresford winery. £3.95 £5.65 £14.50

Sparkling Wine
125ml Bottle

10. Prosecco ~ Jeio, Valdobbiadene, Italy, N.V.
Now this was a pleasant surprise to us all, in the past Prosecco
had tended to be over sweet, claggy and even sickly. However this wine is a revelation, clean, dry, crisp a real joy!!!
£21.50

11 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay ~ Pelorus, Cloudy Bay, Marlborough, New Zealand N.V.
A top quality sparkling wine from the infamous cult winery of

Dry Fruity Aromatic Bottle

17. Chenin/Sauvignon Blanc ~ Buiten Blanc, Buitenverwachtung, Constantia, S.Africa 2003
With crisp apples from the Chenin Blanc and gooseberry fruit from the Sauvignon, this wine is sensational on the palate and suits a vast range of tastes. £14.50

18. Garganega ~ Soave, San Michele, Ca' Regate, Italy 2004
This wine is a very special animal from a high quality grower and
deserves your interest. Fresh, delicate Lemon and Almond notes and very good pure fruit make for lovely drinking. Highly recommended. £16.25

19. Sauvignon Blanc ~ Buitenverwachtung, Constantia, S.Africa 2003
I have been lucky enough to visit this small family run vineyard, situated in the luscious rolling terroirs of Constantia and this wine echoes the environment the fruit was grown in. Ripe, fruity and alive. £16.95

20. Sauvignon Blanc ~ White Label, Morton Estate, Marlborough, New Zealand 2003
Fabulous nose, full rich and tropical Sauvignon not a hint of herbacousness here, but instead rich lycee type fruit – the nose that made New Zealand famous.
£18.75

Medium Dry Light Fruity Bottle

21. Semillon/Sauvignon ~ Chateau Haut Grelot, 1er Cote du Blaye, Bordeaux, France 2003.
Nice yellow robe. Intense and pleasant fruity nose. Powerful and strong finish.

£14.95

22. Chardonnay ~ Macon Charnay, Didier Tripoz, Burgundy, France 2003
For me this is how Chardonnay from burgundy should be simple, un- complicated, not heady and over oaked. An easy to drink wine that oozes quality.

£16.95

23. Pinot Gris ~ J&F Lurton, Mendoza, Argentina 2003
The Lurton brothers of Bordeaux fame have taken their skill and wine producing know how to foreign shores and this wine is one of their great successes.
£18.25

24. Riesling ~ Old River, Cairnbrae, Marlborough, New Zealand 2002
The only New Zealand Riesling to win a Gold Medal at this year's International Wine Challenge. Classy Lime and Floral tones.

£19.50

25. Chardonnay ~ Unwooded, Madfish, Western Australia 2004
This wine shouts the Western Australia gospel good and loud, with quality fruit and stylish design values.
£20.50

Medium Dry Full Bodied Oaked Bottle

26. Chardonnay ~ Vasse Felix, Margaret River, Western Australia 2003
This wine is from the first commercial vineyard in Margaret River, and is more European in style. Full bodied, rich and round.
£22.95

27. Chardonnay ~ Chablis, Billaud Simon, Burgundy, France 2003
Billaud Simon is widely regarded as the finest wine producer in Chablis, and I find it hard to disagree, this is stereotypical Chablis at its best, steely with ripe fruit.

£23.95

28 Chardonnay ~ Rully 1er Cru, Rabource, Olivier Leflaive, Burgundy, France 2003
Tremendous purity on the palate. A perfect balance of creamy fruit & nutty minerality with a citrussy edge. Lovely white Burgundy.
£26.50

Creamy honeyed notes and a silky texture create a harmonious wine that conveys all the refined values of good Burgundy.
£31.50

Medium Aromatic Bottle

30. Semillon ~ Chateau Tours des Gendres, Cuvee Conti, Bergerac, France 2003
Here's a wine you don't see too often, its 100% Semillon, from Paul Conti and Co regarded as probably the best producer in Bergerac, a mind blowing experience!

£16.95

31. Riesling ~ Blue Slate, Ernest Loosen, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany 2004
Unfortunately due to the huge influx of nasty German wines to our supermarkets in the 70's and 80's such as Hock, Blue Nun and Black Tower the British public have become dis – enchanted with German wine but when you look past the debris, discoveries like Ernest Loosen can be made and here is a fantastic example of what Germany does best. Floral, aromatic with medium body.

£17.95

32. Gewurztraminer ~ Domaine Fleischer, Cuvee Charlotte, Alsace, France 2002
Beautiful yellow colour. Intense and very typical Gewurztraminer fruity aromas. In the mouth, very rich and pleasant. A very subtle and elegant wine.
£23.50

Red Wine
Light Fruity Bottle

33. Gamay ~ Morgon, J.Descombes, Beaujolais, France 2004
The 2004 Beaujolais wines are sensational – deep, potentially long lived, an incredible harmony of the freshness of the Gamay and the structure of the soft tannins.

The Monestrell grape has been sensitively handled here to provide a nose and palate which exude freshness and brightly fruited charm, allied to a dash of spice.
£16.95

36. Merlot/Cab.Sauv./Sangiovese ~ Vitiano, Falesco, Umbria, Italy 2004
Grab this while you can – it has been rated 89 points by Robert Parker and will surely not last long. A 3rd each Cabernet, Merlot and Sangiovese. Fleshy, midweight and rounded red from Umbria.

£18.50

37. Pinot Noir ~ De Loach, Russian River, Sonoma County, California 2003
This is a terrifically fruity, potent wine from California's Sonoma County region. De Loach are serious Burgundy Pinot Noir fans but their Pinot Noirs are distinctly New World in approach and have won plaudits the world over.

£19.50

38. Pinot Noir ~ White Label, Morton Estate, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand 2002
Well these days New Zealand Pinot Noir speaks for itself and does not need selling and this wine is a fine example, fruit driven with a velvety smoothness.
£21.50

39. Pinot Noir ~ Jean Louis Denois, Cote du Languedoc, France 2003
Here, Pinot Noir, the classic Burgundy grape is grown superbly well in what some might think is the unlikely setting of the Languedoc. This wine tastes exactly as Pinot Noir should with delicious Cherry fruit and is better than much Burgundy at more money!
£22.50

Medium to Full Bodied Bottle

40. Dolcetto ~ d'Alba, Prunotto, Piedmont, Italy 2003
A piedmont classic, a piercingly refreshing Dolcetto, redolent of chocolate and damson, its crying out for food.

£19.95

49. Shiraz ~ The Lodge Hill, Jim Barry, Clare Valley, Australia 2003
A rich, complex Shiraz with heady aromas of plums and dark cherries, mixed with vanilla and oak. Juicy robust fruit follows on the palate with a touch of earthiness and fine grained tannins.

£21.00

50. Syrah/Grenache/Mouvedre ~ Cote du Rhone, Clos du Caillou, Bouquet des Garrigues, Rhone Valley France 2002
The is one of the jewels of the Rhone, one of the finest of its type. This is hardly surprising given that it is a Chateauneuf du Pape in all but name: when the appellation was classified in the 1930's, the then producer was not interested in having his vineyards included, despite the fact that all of his neighbours did. As a result Clos du Caillou is a walled enclave surrounded by an appellation of which it is not part.

£22.00

51. Syrah ~ Crossroads Estate, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand 2002
The grower insists on calling this Syrah rather than the usual Antipodean title Shiraz. Peppery fruit but without jammy overtones and when you taste it you will see why, as it owes more to French style than Australian. The cooler climate of New Zealand, brings a greater finesse. Came out as top red at our recent Staff tasting for the new list.

£24.95

52. Syrah/Grenache ~ Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine de Cristia, Rhone Valley, France 2002

£30.95

Big Tannic Blockbuster Bottle

56. Malbec ~ Chateau du Cedre, Cuvee Heritage, Cahors, France 2001
Malbec from the South of France you ask? I'm afraid there's not much in the world of wine the French did not do first! Often known as the black wine, it has incredible concentration but is still approachable in its youth.

£16.50

57. Zinfandel ~ De Loach, Russian River, Sonoma County, California 2002
This big tannic, full bodied wine, has an initial abundance of fruit, and needs food preferably full flavoured dishes that include game.

£17.50

58. Malbec ~ Reserva, Luigi Bosca, Mendoza, Argentina 2002
For me Malbec is what the Argies do best, this is and fruitful, big, tannic wine. My favourite food match is Stilton or any blue cheese, its fat content makes the wine smooth and velvety.

£18.95

59. Carmenere ~ Araucano, J&F Lurton, Central Valley, Chile 2002
The French influence still exists though ,as this wine is produced by the Lurton brothers the well known flying winemakers from France. Made in the Colchagua Valley it has a lovely deep colour with lashings of sweet Bramble fruit and good Tannins. Try it!

£22.50

60. Syrah/Grenache/Mouvedre ~ Chateau de la Negly, La Falaise, du Clape, Coteaux du Languedoc, France 2003
Wow! Mind blowing, this is something special, it is reminiscent of
Christmas and Mulled Wine and finishes with throaty warm sensation often associated with a good malt whisky.
£25.95
