Although Porto Colom has the largest natural harbour of Mallorca, it still remains a small traditional fishing village where the old town area around the port is considered by many as one of the best preserved old town centres of Mallorca. Originally known as the port for Felanitx, famous for shipping wine, it was named in honour of Christopher Columbus, who is said to have been born here, although the people of Genoa may disagree! Porto Colom has since resisted large scale tourist development and today offers an array of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants.
