Review on Café 52

Steve Bothwell opened this splendid little eatery in 1995 and it's now a focus of the action around The Green - Aberdeen's rejuvenated social hub. Café 52 is an earthy, warm, slightly 'wholemeal' kind of place that delivers honest seasonal food at crunch-busting prices.

Easy-going lunches focus on soups, groovy sandwiches and a handful of more filling options such as pork and sage meatloaf with homemade piccalilli or beef burgundy with dauphinoise potatoes. The kitchen spreads its wings in the evening, serving up baked black pudding with Riesling-poached pear and blackberry syrup, slow-cooked lamb shank with prune and chickpea casserole, and citrus risotto with roasted organic squash. Puds and cakes come courtesy of the legendary 'Mrs B', who dreams up carrot cake with toffee sauce, limoncello trifle, bramble pannacotta and other sweet delights.

During the afternoon, the kitchen feeds the crowds with an assortment of tapas - prawns with garlic oil, bratwurst with beetroot, roasted pepper with marinated artichokes and the like (served 2.30 - 6.00pm Mon-Fri, 4.00 - 6.00pm Sat).
