Originally a great coaching inn on the London to Fishguard road, the Angel stands proud in the centre of Abergavenny, and has been privately run as a hotel since 2002.

The full restaurant menu plots a course through the British, French and Mediterranean repertoire, taking in Black Mountain smoked salmon, a salad of duck confit with frisée salad and lentils, roast rump of Welsh lamb with green beans and potato gratin, and desserts ranging from hot crêpe with sautéed apple, sultanas and Calvados to tiramisù. Similar dishes are also available in the less formal surroundings of the comfortable bar and pretty courtyard.

The 100-bin wine list is a prestigious affair that has picked up a clutch of accolades and commendations, including a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence (the only one in Wales).
