Review on The Thatched Tavern
Tourists and devotees of the 'sport of kings' often set their sights on The Thatched Tavern, a beautiful beamed seventeenth-century inn, which stands only a mile from Ascot racecourse and 4 miles from regal Windsor.
The kitchen makes good use of produce from local growers and suppliers for a menu that offers a decent choice of gastro pub dishes, ancient and modern. If you're in the mood for something traditional, try – perhaps – salmon and dill fishcakes with caper butter sauce or steak and kidney pud with mash and steamed vegetables; alternatively pick something a touch more contemporary such as pan-fried wood pigeon breasts on red chard with pancetta crisps and warm beetroot vinaigrette or medallions of pork fillet with porcini sauce on parsnip purée.
There are also intriguing daily specials like seared peppered yellow-fin tuna with sweet mango and oregano salsa, plus a choice of desserts that might include lemon and ginger crunch. The decent 70-bin wine list straddles the globe.
