Review on The Waggoners
Set between pretty houses and cottages in Ayot Green near Welwyn Garden City, The Waggoners is a refurbished 17th century coaching inn serving unique and well presented French cuisine, infused with international influences. Nowadays it's run by Aude and Laurent Brydniak who have a wealth of experience and have been behind a number of successful restaurants over the last 16 years. A cosy homely atmosphere pervades with dark red walls and stylish pictures and expect be greeted by the friendly French staff.
The kitchen sends out good French dishes in the shape of say, pan fried foie gras with toasted brioche and caramelised apple on a bed of wild mushrooms and Perigourdine sauce, duck breast served with Dauphinois potatoes, pan fried pears and red wine ju or perhaps herb crusted plaice filets with thyme and fish stock served with baby vegetables and wild mushrooms. Finish with French apple tart with vanilla dream ice cream or a selection of French cheeses. The wine list leans heavily, as expected, towards France with some support from Spain and the New World.
