Review on The George Inn
Rebuilt after a devastating fire in 2004, this eighteenth-century coaching inn is now thriving as a smart, stylish gastropub/restaurant. Once a stopover for coaches travelling between London and Norwich, it is handily placed not far from the M11 and only 15 minutes' drive from the centre of Cambridge.
The interior has been lovingly and sympathetically restored by a team of dedicated craftsmen and there are now two classy dining rooms in the newly furbished barn-like extension (complete with an inviting al fresco terrace). Smartly clad staff provide relaxed, professional service.
Evening meals might commence with carpaccio of smoked goose with red wine spiced pear or warm haddock, leek and Gruyère tart with pea shoot salad, before fillet of wild salmon on crab and sweetcorn risotto or roast venison with caramelised parsnips and bitter chocolate sauce. To close the show, consider black cherry and Kirsch chocolate box with Mascarpone or apple and blackberry crumble with a citrus oat crust. Plans are in the pipeline for accommodation in converted barns alongside the pub.
