Review on Swan at Shakespeare's Globe
Founded by pioneering actor/director Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare’s Globe is a groundbreaking venture dedicated to exploring the bard’s work and incorporating not only the re-invented Globe Theatre but exhibitions and educational resources as well.
There are spectacular views across the Thames from the revamped bar and brasserie (now called Swan at the Globe), which provides a casual setting for daytime and pre-show meals. The theatre bar menu runs right through until 8.00pm and it offers a flexible, user-friendly selection of soups (parsnip with caramelised chestnuts), ploughman's, salads, few hot dishes such as pork cassoulet with marjoram sauce and afters like plum crumble.
Alternatively, opt for the brasserie menu (12.00 - 2.30pm) which has a more extensive choice across the board. Begin with pan-fried scallops, carrot and cumin purée or confit guinea fowl and foie gras, before sampling grilled halibut with chips and caper mousseline or roast Gressingham duck with honey and cherry sauce. Desserts range from treacle tart to pear jelly with spiced pear compote, and there are some quaffable wines on the short list.
