Review on Tas Pide
Like its elder brother, Tas, this great-value Turkish hangout is a godsend for culture vultures heading for the Old Vic and South Bank. It is well-liked for its animated mix of conviviality, music and authentic food: the speciality here is a range of 'pides' (boat-shaped, Turkish-style 'pizzas' with myriad flavours ranging from sun-dried apricots, hellim cheese and peppers to cured beef with Charleston pepper, mint and an egg on top).
The array of meze is also a perennial crowd-puller, with its selection of nibbles like borek (filo pastries stuffed with Feta cheese and spinach) and warm aubergines with peppers and cool yoghurt. To follow there are grills in abundance (from marinated chicken wings to lamb's kidneys with oregano and cumin) plus a good showing of casseroles (appropriate, since 'tas' is the name of a traditional Anatolian cooking pot). Vegetarians are given plenty of choice and there are traditional sweets like kunefe ('shredded wheat' with unsalted white cheese and honey syrup) to round things off. Wash it all down with some gutsy Turkish wine.
