Review on Blagraves House
Named after the family that once lived in the house, this atmospheric Grade I listed dwelling lays claim to being the oldest residence in Barnard Castle. The setting may be historic, but the place continues to do sterling service as a family-run restaurant offering food with a distinct modern slant.
Today's visitors can eat where Cromwell once dined (in a room with a crested ceiling and oak beams) although the monthly-changing menu is likely to be very different. Here you will find starters such as terrine of rabbit with lavender and wild nettles or tortellini of wild mushrooms in a light vegetable broth before main courses covering everything from sauté breast of guinea fowl with rhubarb and caramel to grilled fillet of trout with a niçoise garnish.
Desserts include homemade ice creams and the 60-bin wine list offers decent value across the range.
