Review on St Helena Restaurant
Named after the nearby Abbey Church of St Helena, which has associations with evangelical author John Bunyan, this stylish and elegantly appointed restaurant occupies a secluded sixteenth-century manor house behind a walled garden just a few miles from Bedford.
Long-serving owners (brothers-in-law Raffaele and Franco) have clocked up over two decades here, and continue to please the locals with a wide range of European and international dishes with strong Mediterranean influences, backed up by a fine selection of vintage wines. Typical dishes from their lengthy seasonal menus and daily specials might include steamed crab and prawn layered with fresh pasta and served with lobster cappuccino sauce, pork shank with faggots, black pudding, Savoy cabbage and cider sauce, and boned stuffed quail on truffled cauliflower with a creamed Marsala sauce.
