Review on Deanes at Queens
Belfast empire builder and Michelin-starred chef Michael Deane has done a great service to the university crowd by opening Deanes at Queens in College Gardens, overlooking Methodist College ('Methody') and some of the city's finest academic architecture.
As with all Deane's ventures, the emphasis here is on flair, imagination, good value and inspired food. There's also a strong continental feel to the place - especially when the sun shines and crowds are sitting outside on the terrace.
Menus are in the bar/grill/brasserie mould, with the emphasis on flexibility. Soups, salads, pasta dishes and deli platters are supported by more substantial dishes such as crab and chorizo risotto, steak with frites, venison sausages and breast of duck with tomato and herb couscous. Light snacks, cakes and pastries are available during the afternoon, and the wine list is a sharp, savvy assortment of keenly priced, modern labels.
