Review on The Restaurant - Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast
The Fitzwilliam Hotel Group has spread its wings with the opening of a ultra-modern luxury venue next to the Grand Opera House in the heart of Belfast, and it promises to add a stylish new dimension to the city. The owners have also enlisted chef Kevin Thornton (from the Michelin-starred sister restaurant in Dublin) to oversee the food in the brasserie-style restaurant.
Menu by Kevin Thornton - as it's known - is deliberately casual and user-friendly, with accessible food rather than rarefied gastronomy as the order of the day. That said, head chef Patrick Leonard (ex-Claridge's) is offering a mix of contemporary ideas (think Med meets fusion) with some old favourites for the diehards.
Thornton's signature bacon and cabbage terrine with shallot vinaigrette and leek purée shows up among the starters, alongside porcini mushroom risotto. To follow, there might be fillet of tuna with fennel ribbons, soy and ginger vinaigrette, confit of duck with red cabbage and Dijon mustard sauce, while desserts are topped by bourbon vanilla crème brûlée with a Bushmills whiskey snap. The wine list has a tasty selection by the glass.
