Review on La Poule au Pot
A redoubtable grandmère among London’s French restaurants, this venerable institution is also universally rated as a romantic rendezvous par excellence. For more than 40 years, couples and others have rejoiced in its unequivocal rusticity. The combination of bare floorboards, big windows draped in lace, close-packed tables and house wine served in magnums is irresistible.
French is the first language here, and there’s no disguising what’s on the menu. The kitchen goes for big old-fashioned flavours and doesn’t care a jot about trends or fads. Here you will find soupe à l’oignon, coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon and â€" of course that peasant classic in all its glory â€" the poule au pot. To finish, it’s a toss-up between crème brûlée, tarte Tatin or mousse au chocolat.
