Review on Cantina del Ponte
'Tuscany-upon-Thames' could be the moniker for this wonderfully relaxed venue Cantina del Ponte, which is part of the Conran-inspired gastro-complex (now D&D London) on Butlers Wharf at Shad Thames. Great views, terracotta floors and a mural depicting an Italian marketplace enhance the sunny Mediterranean glow.
Here you can feast on tuna steak with caponata and pistachio sauce, breast of guinea fowl with truffled asparagus and Fontina sauce, noisettes of spring lamb with green peas and mustard sauce or roast rabbit with polenta and black olives. The antipasti table makes a good spread at lunchtime, pizzas from the wood-fired oven are a highpoint, and inventive pasta dishes also make their presence felt (pappardelle with duck confit and sage butter, for example). As a finale, there's white chocolate bavarois with rhubarb compote, tiramisu or Ricotta cake with Strega ice cream. To complete the mood, take a tour through the far-from-average Italian wine list.
