Review on Marshall Meadows Country House Hotel
England’s ‘most northerly hotel’ is situated just a quarter-of-a-mile from the Scottish border, and only two miles from Berwick-on-Tweed. It’s a Georgian mansion standing in 15 acres of mature grounds within easy access of the A1.
The restaurant is on two levels, with a traditional ground-floor room and an attractively oak-panelled, mezzanine gallery above offering a touch more intimacy. Tables with a sea view are at a premium.
Menus offer straightforward modern cooking based on decent local produce in the shape of duck liver pâté with apple and pear chutney, roast wood pigeon with wild mushrooms and truffle oil and pan-fried Northumbrian beef with black pudding and red onion marmalade. Fish-lovers might opt for prawn and crab soufflé or fillet of sea bass on a julienne of vegetables and red pepper coulis, while desserts have featured honey and whisky parfait.
