Review on Royal Oak Hotel, Llugwy River Restaurant
Built as a Victorian coaching inn right in the heart of Snowdonia, and once home to a celebrated artists' colony, the Royal Oak is now a popular hotel with tourists, mountaineers, walkers and other outdoor types. Guests also take advantage the hotel's many facilities including the Stable Bar Bistro (great for watching the rugby internationals or listening to live Dixieland jazz) and the contemporary Grill Bar with its conservatory extension.
Pride of place, however, goes to the formal Llugwy River Restaurant with its ornate plaster ceiling and resident harpist plucking the strings every Wednesday night. The kitchen deals in modern Welsh cooking with an eclectic edge and lots of global influences. Whole lobster cooked in a Thai marinade and served with coconut and mango rice is a signature dish, but the kitchen also brings it all back home with a 'celebration of Welsh lamb' (cannon, slow-braised shoulder and pan-fried sweetbreads with carrot gâteau and broad bean ragoût). Start with ceviche of hand-dived scallops, lime sabayon and peppered frisée, and round off with vanilla pannacotta, poached pear and wild Welsh honey syrup.
