Review on The Westwood Restaurant, Bar & Grill
'Bringing a little bit of New York style to East Yorkshire', the Westwood is set alongside a spa in the grounds of a stunning Grade-II listed Georgian mansion. It has been coolly done out in contemporary style with a lounge bar for pre-prandial drinks (complete with an illuminated wine wall), a delightful terrace and a chic dining room with white walls and dark brown tables.
The kitchen mixes European themes and techniques with locally sourced produce for a lively menu of sharp modern dishes. Aged, grain-fed beef and seafood are cooked 'a la plancha' (try Casterbridge bone-in ribeye or sea bass with samphire, shrimps and capers). Elsewhere, starters such as English pea and broad bean salad with soft poached egg and lovage velouté give way to pastas, risottos and mains along the lines of roast Goosnargh chicken with creamed Parmesan polenta, feta and almond pesto. To finish, hot chocolate fondant with peanut butter ice cream is worth the 10-minute wait. Brunch is the big deal for daytime eating on Sundays.
If you fancy getting close to the action, the Westwood also has an eight-seater chef's table, which provides an elevated view of the kitchen at work.
