Review on Purnell's Bistro & Ginger's Bar
Glyn Purnell, chef patron of Michelin starred Purnell's restaurant in Birmingham has re-launched his Asquith Restaurant and after a short closure for a refit it has re-opened as Purnell's Bistro & Ginger's Bar. The bistro still features the exclusive and glamorous Ginger's Bar with its décor that harks back to the era of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire.
In charge of Ginger's Bar is the award winning bar manager and mixologist Chris Hoy who will be offering classic cocktails, as well as 'forward thinking' creations such as the 'Smoked Bacon & Maple Old Fashioned' pioneered by New York bartender Eben Freeman. There is an extensive spirits list, a selection of local ciders, bohemian lagers and award winning cask ales together with a carefully chosen wine list.
Former head chef Jason Eaves has left for pastures new and his place has been taken by Michael Dipple, a former winner of the British Culinary Federation's Young Chef of the Year Award. Seasonal ingredients are carefully sourced for the bistro's menu that features starters of smoked haddock risotto, crunchy haddock and curry oil or honey glaze confit duck and Waldorf salad. Main courses take in slow cooked lamb, Moroccan spiced couscous, glazed plum tomatoes and harissa or pan fried sea bream Meuniere, garlic chilli prawns and new potatoes. Finish with a classic dessert of Summer fruit crumble served with vanilla ice cream or pear and cinnamon iced parfait English blackberries, poached pear and blackberry sorbet.
