Review on Eagle & Child
Situated in an attractive conservation area just a few miles from the M6, the Eagle & Child is a convincing mix of local drinkers pub and casual country restaurant; there's a bowling green and croquet lawn outside - if you fancy trying your luck.
Inside, it has its full quota of low beams, cream walls hung with prints, handsomely carved oak settles and china dogs. The landlord keeps a splendid, ever-changing stock of real ales, and food is served throughout the pub.
The best stuff appears on the list of blackboard specials, which covers everything from north-country classics like roast Bury black pudding with mash and gravy, potted shrimps and shepherd's pie with pickled onions to exotica such as warm crispy duck with chorizo, grilled fillet of sea bass with crabmeat and oriental vegetables, or Thai-style stir-fried beef with noodles. Desserts return to the comfort zone for sticky toffee pudding and spiced banana with warm butter cake.
