Review on The Moorings

The Moorings is Richard and Angela Long's dream come true. They are hooked on Norfolk, adore Blakeney and have now settled into their unpretentious neighbourhood restaurant a few yards from the quay. This is a casual place, open throughout the day for morning coffee, homemade cakes and pastries, plus simple lunches of filled ciabattas, and baguettes, bowls of soup, salads and hot specials.

In the evening, the kitchen rolls up its collective sleeves for a more ambitious restaurant menu based around fish from the local boats, seasonal game and locally grown fruit and vegetables. Depending on the time of year, you might be treated to cod, cockle and prawn chowder with fresh herbs, baked fillet of black bream with a parsley and sea salt crust, roast breast of free-range chicken with butternut squash, prosciutto and balsamic dressing or fillet of venison with celeriac mash. Angela's desserts have a glowing reputation – try her lemon tart or summer pudding – and there's a lively list of two dozen wines to go with the food. Note that opening hours may be restricted during the winter months (November-March).

    Fresh, Fabulous and First Class

It would be easy to think that being on holiday and visiting a dear friend I hadn't seen in many years put me in such a positive mood that I would have gushed about anything served to me. Not so. I try to retain fairness and an open mind wherever I go and have to say that our time at the Moorings was a pure delight, from the welcome at the door to the good-bye at the end of our amazing meal. I started with a crab cake that was moist, well-seasoned and served at just the right temperature. Main course for me was a grilled seabass fillet with crushed new potatoes, parsley, pinenut & seasalt crust, w salsa verde. Just beautiful blend of fresh ingredients, perfectly prepared yet retaining their individual flavours. The star of the evening was my friend's mean which I was lucky enough to taste; Baked Binham Blue, butternut squash & leek tart, caraway & red onion relish. This vegetarian dish had such intense flavour and such an interesting mix of textures and ingredients that I've begged the chef for the recipe to create back home in Florida. Let's hope the stars align and I get lucky. Would most definitely recommend this pearl of a seaside restaurant for its friendly staff matched only by the skill of the talented chef.
