Review on Oscar Bar & Restaurant, Charlotte Street Hotel
The Oscar Restaurant and Bar is set in the elegant Charlotte Street Hotel, deep in media-land just north of Soho, this cool hotel has been cleverly designed with echoes of the 'Bloomsbury Group' in mind and lots of vivid original art by local artists of the period. The Oscar restaurant at street level is a frenetic, colourful space with stained glass lanterns, striped seating and a vast mural depicting 'scenes of contemporary London life'.
Diners can watch chefs at work in the open-plan kitchen, creating a broad range of contemporary brasserie-style dishes with French and Mediterranean overtones. You might begin with poached egg, truffle polenta and caviar cream or pan-fried Scottish scallops with parsnip crisps and chorizo, before sea bass with baby beets, Jerusalem artichoke and hazelnuts, daube of beef or Gressingham duck with caramelised celeriac, Puy lentils and sherry jus. To conclude, try quince pudding with ginger ice cream or tarte Tatin with Granny Smith sorbet. Good selection of wines by the glass.
