Review on The Dining Room
Lisa and Chris Astley have made quite a name for themselves at this stylish contemporary venue overlooking St James's Square in the centre of Boroughbridge. She maintains a friendly presence out front, he run things in the kitchen.
Proceedings begin in the comfortable upstairs lounge bar with its bookcases, sofas and welcoming fire. Customers then progress downstairs to the elegant, restrained dining room, which is brightened up with displays of modern paintings.
Chris Astley works to a lively repertoire that is pepped up with lots of individual twists and turns. After seared king prawns in a Thai-style sauce or a well-judged soup (perhaps roast tomato and red pepper), there might be pan-fried fillet of sea bass with roasted artichokes and a warm Mediterranean dressing or corn-fed chicken with black pudding in a white wine and tarragon sauce. Desserts are impeccably crafted confections such as Yorkshire rhubarb with liquorice ice cream or malted crème brûlée with bitter chocolate sorbet. The impressive wine list puts France and the New World at the centre of things.
