Review on Bistro on the Beach

Bistro on the Beach certainly lives up to its name. It stands in a glorious spot on the Solent Promenade with to-die-for sea views from just about every table, whether you are sitting outside or gazing through the full-length windows in the casual dining room.

During the day, the place operates as a no-nonsense seaside café, feeding families, sunbathers and fun-loving types with locally caught fish, home-cooked hams, ice creams and the like – not forgetting traditional roasts on Sundays. There are also barbecues during the school holidays.

At night, it transforms into a lively bistro, offering all manner of eclectic dishes ranging from cannon of lamb with garlic mousse, pear and mint salsa to tiger prawn and scallop kebabs with coconut rice and sweet chilli sauce. Most savoury items can be ordered as starters or main courses, while desserts promise things like bananas in butterscotch or pecan and treacle tart with maple syrup ice cream.

Bistro on the Beach is also featured in: Michelin Guide, Hardens, AA Guide

We were a party of 10, to celebrate a family birthday. Food was very disappointing especially the only vegetarian option a vegetable linguine but with penne! Only bread and olives for vegetarian starter very poor and prawn cocktail not available!
One steak was well cooked but should have been medium rare and one was served cold: a fresh one took more than 10 minutes a late start for that person. Mushy peas were cold. Dessert choice was disappointing.
Service was dreadful we had to request someone to take our drinks order after a considerable wait, and water was repeatedly asked for as it had been forgotten.
The petite waitress ,lacked inter-personal skills and talked at you rather than to you. Very slow service overall. We had booked in advance and had enjoyed food here previously.
