Review on Langtry Manor Hotel
It's romance all the way in this splendid edifice, built by Edward VII for his mistress Lillie Langtry. Inside, there are all the expected trappings – twinkling chandeliers, a minstrel's gallery, stained-glass windows and lofty ceilings. The hotel even puts on lavish six-course Edwardian banquets every Saturday night, complete with waitresses dressed in mobcaps and traditional garb specially for the occasion.
The dining room occupies a resplendent baronial hall hung with Tudor tapestries, although the food has its feet firmly in the present. You might open with ham hock ravioli, mustard sabayon and truffle oil or seared scallops with celeriac and ginger, ahead of sea trout with cauliflower cream, broad been and herb dressing or pistachio-crusted rump of new season's lamb with baby spring vegetables. As a finale, try raspberry soufflé with chocolate ice cream or banana bavarois with glazed bananas.
