Review on Mumtaz
Glaring neon signs mark out this sprawling conversion of a stone terrace on Bradford’s outer ring road. At the front of the place is a takeaway area with Mumtaz own-brand pickles, sweetmeats and ready meals on display; beyond there are numerous dining areas on different levels, with posh marble floors, classy modern furnishings and seating for 500. It’s an Indian that doesn’t do things by halves.
Traditional Kashmiri cooking is the kitchen’s stock-in- trade, witness the list of karahi dishes such as cod in a sharp pomegranate sauce or chicken with bhindis, but there are also detours into other regions for char-grilled lamb boti, chicken pakoras, assorted biryanis and a decent showing of vegetables and bread.
Alcohol is not permitted on the premises, but salt lassi and freshly squeezed juices are recommended. For those who want to chill out and 'chit chat', Mumtaz also has two Gapp Shapp lounge areas with facilities for no-tobacco 'shisha smoking' (flavours range from mint to strawberry).
