Review on The Red Lion

The focal point of a genteel village midway between Northampton and Bedford, the Red Lion at Brafield on the Green has taken on a new lease of life as an up-scale, bistro-style gastro pub. Inside, it is cleverly divided up into cosy lounge areas complete with leather sofas and a bright, animated dining room.

Chef Chris Simpson made his name on the London gastro pub scene and his cooking has a modern European accent: fillet of salmon on rissolé potato with red onion marmalade, herb and caper dressing is one of his favourite signature dishes. Other intriguing offerings might include crab and pea risotto with shaved Pecorino, braised corn-fed chicken with bean and chorizo cassoulet, and lamb rump with rosemary polenta, Savoy cabbage and red wine jus.

A few simpler dishes appear on the lunch menu (along with ciabattas and ploughman's), while desserts offer things like creamed rice pudding with poached peaches and warm chocolate fondant with hazelnut ice cream. The keenly priced wine list includes ample selections by the glass.

We went as a party of 7 The service was terrible from the start. We had to keep getting up to order drinks. We ordered our meals ,which took some time to come. When they eventually arrived one of the meals was uneatable due to the chicken being rock hard. After some thought they agreed to not charge us for it. When the bill came they had only deducted £5. Con artists as well would NOT go back . VERY expensive ordinary food.
