Review on Peterstone Court
Hidden away down a quite lane on the fringes of the Brecon Beacons National Park, this beautiful Georgian Manor makes the most of its fine views and stunning grounds by the banks of the River Usk. It combines the virtues of an elegant country retreat with a spa and leisure suite, although its reputation really rests with its food.
The owners’ hill farm at Glaisfer Uchaf near the village of Llangynidr provides much of the produce for the kitchen - that’s ‘less than seven miles from farm to plate’. Expect complex and exquisitely presented modern dishes along the lines of ravioli filled with Aylesbury duck and morels finished with hot-smoked duck breast and caramelised chicory, roast rump of lamb with sun-blushed tomato and basil mash and a tartlet of lamb’s kidneys or pan-fried red mullet with pea risotto and anchovy beignets.
Desserts often include elaborate assemblages based around different fruit such as rhubarb or raspberries, and the selection of Welsh and French cheeses is worth investigating. Alternatively, order the seven-course tasting menu to do the place real justice.
