Review on Brook's
Savoy-trained Darrell Brooks has brought a touch of nostalgic elegance to Brighouse – a West Yorkshire town famed for its prize-winning brass bands, but now with a decent restaurant to boast about as well.
Neutral walls covered with a varied and personal collection of paintings offset polished floorboards in the airy bar and the dining room. In the evening, when the candles are lit, it feels genuinely romantic. And – for any wannabe David Hockneys who want to linger – wax crayons are provided for drawing on the lily-white cloths: the best efforts are framed and hung on the wall.
Menus change weekly and it's worth looking out for the 'regular specials': Brook's offers a version of gravlax involving smoked haddock, as well as char-grilled kangaroo with butter bean mash, red wine and thyme sauce. Otherwise, you might make a meal from crab and sweetcorn fritters with ratatouille salsa, braised shoulder of lamb with smoked bacon, rosemary and Puy lentils, and poached peaches in pink Champagne with pistachio Mascarpone.
