Review on The Ginger Pig

The husband and wife team of Ben and Pamela McKellar have made a name for themselves with their Gingerman restaurants in Brighton before adding a third string to their bow in the shape of the Ginger Pig gastropub. Set in a defunct Hove hotel just a few minutes' walk from the beach, it's described as a 'relaxed foodie hangout'.

Over the years, the McKellars have built up a valuable network of local producers and suppliers, who also provide excellent stuff for the new pub kitchen: pork from Boyton Farm, for example, might appear as slow-roast belly with creamed leeks and apple sauce or in sausages with parsnip mash and onion gravy. Other dishes worth noting include smoked duck with hazelnut, pear and sorrel salad, corn-fed chicken breast with organic mushrooms and baby spinach, and desserts such as Bramley apple and pecan crumble.

Cheeses are from Kent and Sussex, and bottles from Chapel Down vineyard appear on the workmanlike wine list; there are also regional real ales for beer buffs. The McKellars are planning to utilise the building's upstairs rooms to provide accommodation in the foreseeable future.

    Sunday Lunch Par Excellence

Went for Sunday lunch on a whim without a booking, greeted by the wonderful front of house person Charlotte. Place was packed but she asked us to sit at the bar while she sorted out her bookings. Back in less than 5 mins with a table for us. Excellent inclusive fresh bread with a local rape seed oil for dipping. We then both had the roast beef with all the trimmings - cooked rare, the way we like it. Absolutely not to be faulted. Followed by an historic apple and rhubarb crumble. With a bottle of excellent Malbec this was a lunch to remember at a very reasonable price. We will return.
