Review on Salon
Salon opened in December 2012 in a former hairdressers, hence the name, located above the British charcuterie shop Canon & Cannon on Brixton's Market Row. The restaurant has now evolved from its original conceptions and in August 2016 a ground floor bar was installed, while November 2017 saw the opening of their Wine Store next store, selling over 130 bins sourced from across the world.
Head Chef and founder is Nicholas Balfe, who previously worked at the critically acclaimed Brunswick House Cafe in Vauxhall, as well as the Young Turks chefs collective. The small dining room overlooked by the open kitchen has a somewhat basic décor, with simply laid dark wood tables and chairs, and neutral walls lined with shelves of produce and ingredients. It's the food that is the star of the show here, with seasonal ingredients carefully sourced from trusted suppliers. Featuring a five course no choice menu that changes regularly according to market supplies you might be offered crispy brawn and sorrel, Violet artichoke, radish and ewe's milk curd, squid, chickpeas and wild garlic, hogget, anchovy and Monk's beard and finishing with a dessert of buttermilk pudding, Hibiscus granita and almonds.
Salon has a carefully selected wine list featuring organic, natural or biodynamic wines at attractive prices, plus seasonal aperitifs, cocktails, craft beers and some delicious wild fruit infused spirits made by a forager friend of Nicholas.
